New Years Eve Resolutions Need To Just Calm Down!

Well it’s that time of year again where we make ourselves promise insane things in 2015. Like that we are NEVER eating any processed sugar again. We are going to stop watching all reality shows. Gym every single day – BEAST MODE! We are cutting out ALL UNNECESSARY EXPENSES! By February even the most diligent person is going to go nuts with this all or nothing mentality.

1.      Yes Sugar Is An Evil Food That Makes You Feel Dopamine Like Never Before, I Know You Heart It

But drink more water. Don’t tell yourself no sugar and you are never going to eat a piece of cheesecake again because its going to make you crazy. Eat the cheesecake but do NOT drink the soda. Eating sugar is more satisfying than drinking it in sugary drinks. So let’s take a baby step, more water.

2.      Remember That Just Moving When You Can Is Exercise!

Rethink exercise. Many of us make sweeping goals to join and go to a gym every day in the new year or becoming a CrossFit Olympian is too much too soon. The smartest thing you can do is focus on simply moving your body more. That’s it! Things like walking for an hour while on a business call instead of sitting at your desk, cleaning the house for a couple hours instead of paying someone else to do it, or heading to yoga with a girlfriend instead of sitting at coffee really add up. It’s much more simple than we realize and you don’t need a daunting, painful workout plan in order to reap the benefits and burn calories. You’re also much more likely to stay active and keep moving when you’re enjoying yourself versus killing yourself with crazy-hard workouts.

3.      You Are Never Buying Yourself Anything Again But Food And Gas

You’re going to use your smart phone all the time, might as well get a free app that saves you money in store with pretty much everything! Coupon Sherpa brings for you latest coupons for products ranging from food to games, gadgets to grocery, electronic items to clothing, it shares it all! If you are lucky you may even find coupons for online sites. I have has serious luck with this app at stores like Target, JC Penney and Publix.

        4. It’s the Year You Don’t Plan To Drive Anywhere Unless You Have To Because Fixing Your Car Is Astronomical

You have to get an oil change anyway four times a year why not make it super affordable. Plus, with your social media accounts you are on every day you can save 10% on all repairs. That’s about $400 in savings a year for a standard car like a Honda or Toyota. Might as well come to Bill Tyson’s Auto Repair and take advantage of our discounts and oil change package. It’s $14.99 per standard oil change and we can save you on any other repairs or maintenance jobs you may need.

Car issues that make you anxious like the Walking Dead with Ebola

Bringing in your car when you know something other than an oil change may be needed because it's been acting funny can make anyone nervous. This is like watching the Ebola virus come closer to Florida or waiting for the next Walking Dead episode. It gets tense. We get it. We know that a $10,000 estimate is ridiculous but has happened to you before.

Here are the top things that you can do, should do in the future and what you should never do.

    CAN DO
    - ask friends or family for a trusted auto repair shop
    - bring it in as soon as possible for an estimate
    - if you still don't feel right get a second opinion

    SHOULD DO
    - in the future, if you notice anything, don't let it go for too long
    - look for reviews on Yelp, Facebook, and talk to people who you know have had work done on their cars. If they had a less than great experience, they will tell you where to AVOID.
    - find an auto repair store near you, like Bill Tyson's Auto Repair, that does a thorough 21 point inspection even when you bring it in for something small like an oil change. We let you know if their is trouble ahead for free.

    SHOULD NEVER DO
    - you do NOT have to stick to the dealership service center (it will not void your warranty)
    - do NOT let a small problem sit until it becomes a big expensive problem
    - do NOT be afraid to ask about Loyalty and Discount Programs, we have one at Bill Tyson's Auto Repair

we fix horse trailers. we fix fleet trucks. we pack wheel bearings. whats wrong with my car. my ac isn't working.

Hey everyone! Have you ever had your check engine light come on? Did you panic? Or just ignored it and kept driving? Do you pull to the side of the road and call a tow truck? What does that annoying little light really want from your life? We at Bill Tyson’s Auto Repair are here to tell you!

Don’t panic. It IS a warning light so something is wrong but it could be a few things.  The check engine light has two ways of showing up.

A flashing light is serious. You need to get to Bill Tyson’s Auto Repair in either Wellington or Royal Palm Beach – NOW! If your check engine light is on and flashing, you should not tow horse trailers, haul heavy loads or drive on the highway. Any of these could lead to serious damage or danger or both!

A steady check engine light is less serious, but that doesn’t mean it can wait for weeks. You should plan to get your car inspected. I know it can be a pain and you have work or school. Don’t worry, we have overnight drop off or you can bring it in first thing in the morning and if you have to go to school or work locally we can take you. Your safety is important! Let us help you. It’s free for us to drive you locally so you can get on with the rest of your day and we will call you or email you as soon as we know more.
We are always happy to give free advice in store, on Bill Tyson's Auto Repair Facebook or Twitter or on our blog.
Whatever it is, we are happy to help!

What the hay is DRY ROT, anyway?

We had a customer come into the Royal Palm Beach location to use one of her 4 oil changes in the package we sell. It's actually a really great deal if you are ever interested. You have to get an oil change 4 times a year and why not have it be a $14.99 each with a discount on any other repairs?

She asked us to look over her car for anything else that might be going on. Well, she had dry rot on her tires. We told her at some point soon we will need to look into tires for her because of dry rot. What the heck is dry rot, anyway?, she said.

Well, my fellow Florida folks, this is for you. Dry rot happens from extreme heat like we have in Royal Palm Beach and Wellington, especially in the summer months. What happens to rubber is that it becomes less pliable with extreme conditions. It's not just tread that is wearing down, it's the quality of the rubber starts to change. It will have hairline cracks in it and not be as black in certain spots as it once was. A few spots is normal and not a danger, but many and on more than one tire can be.

We can tell you quickly if you have dry rot!

If you have tread left on the tire, it doesn't mean you can't have dry rot. This most likely means the car isn't driven much or is in the sun day after day, or both. So there can be tread, but the rubber is deteriorating. The car is safe to drive short distances like 30 - 50 miles but not for longer drives or the highway. It can buy you about 3-4 weeks to start looking for tire deals.

We can get you in and out today! Our technicians will let you know if its a danger or if you can hold off.

Call Bill Tyson's Auto Repair at either Royal Palm Beach 561-753-6122 or Wellington 561-753-6101.

What You Need Checked For Long Road Trips

Local, affordable and happy to help

Are you going on a long road trip soon? Or maybe moving? Or going back home after an extended stay in Wellington for the equestrian festivities?

Did you know that towing a trailer makes long distance driving all the more reason to have your car checked before you start your trip? You really should have it check out beforehand because the last thing you want is to get stuck on the side of the road.

    Checklist:
    • tire pressure
    • tire tread (check spare tire too)
    • engine oil level
    • automatic transmission fluid
    • coolant levels
    • wiper blades
    • head and tail lights
    • washer fluid
    • strut alignment
    • belts and steering components
    • jumper cables
Something as small as a flat tire can slow down your ETA to your destination and be a minor inconvenience you can just patch up. However, a serious engine issue or a cracked belt can leave you stuck for a day or two. Either possibilities can both be mostly preventable.

For the families that will be traveling during the summer or holidays we always like to give your car a quick inspection. Or even for those that come down from Illinois or Kentucky for the equestrian festivities every year, we are happy to look over your trucks, trailers and inspect the whole fleet. Safety isn't just being careful. It's being proactive.

Come in to Bill Tyson's Auto Repair today in either Royal Palm Beach or Wellington. Our mechanics are happy to get you back on the road quickly and safely.

How To Become a More Effective Leader, Parent, Teacher, Coach and All Around Loveable Person

This is not our intellectual property, it was such a great topic that I had to repost it for everyone to see. Nobody is perfect and we all can use some tips on how to improve ourselves.

One journalist's view on the Super Bowl of the Seattle Seahawks vs the Denver Broncos and what she saw aside from the game. How to become a more effective leader, parent, teacher, coach and all around better person. Here is her article.

Sunday night Pete Carroll proved that coaching/leading with a nurturing style can indeed magnify the greatness and highest level potential in all of his players, coaches, and colleagues. This is something I firmly believe in and teach daily, because I believe the opposite form of leadership (which is sadly the style that is most “typical”) is detrimental on so many levels. Detrimental to morale, self-esteem, emotional well-being, and flat out de-incentivizing.

Well, I am happy to see Coach Carroll prove that theory wrong and hope that all leaders, coaches, and teachers wake-up to this reality and change their paradigms. And begin to learn emotional intelligence themselves, to inspire and empower their teams/employees/families, and pass along those skill sets/behaviors for future generations.

    Leadership is not a dictatorship.

It is a chance to empower others that might not yet be able to fully empower themselves. This happens best through positive, incentivising words, actions of encouragement and a value system. I believe these are some of the most important leadership lessons and some of the best ways to get the most out of others potential:
1)Prioritize the Well-Being of Relationships First
The health of your relationships is in direct proportion to your happiness. If your relationships are out of sorts, so is what is going on in your head. You will lack focus, clarity, and happiness. Coach Carroll is known for teaching his players the importance of family and relationships. How many times do you hear this in leadership conversations? Probably very seldom, or never. Sadly, often the opposite is taught. Or even worse, no one mentions to aspiring leaders that optimizing success, which in my opinion includes happiness and well-being, starts with nourishing your relationships.
    2) Positive Reinforcement Inspires
When I first began studying psychology in college and the concept of positive reinforcement was introduced to me, all I could think was, “WOW! I sure would have thrived better with that type of conditioning growing up!” And guess what? So does just about everyone.

People innately want to please and be appreciated and encouraged. (Click to Tweet!)

Think about it, when someone compliments you and expresses gratitude for something you have done, doesn’t it make you feel proud and want to do more? Now think about when someone yells at you and demeans you. Do you really feel inspired to want to do your best for that person? Probably not. If you do, it would only be your ego jumping in as self-preservation to want to prove that person wrong. Positive reinforcement is the most effective way to inspire positive behaviors. Having learned the value of this in college, this is the strategy in which I have raised my daughters, and it undoubtedly works.
    3)Consistency and Quick Correction
Now, as some of you read the last line you thought to yourself, I have tried that with my kids and it didn’t work. Positive reinforcement has to be coupled with consistency of expectations, and modeling the desired behaviors as the parent and/or leader. There also needs to be quick correction and potential consequences when the desired behaviors aren’t met.
Let’s look at modeling first. If you expect others to behave one way and you act the opposite of the behavior, you will lose a tremendous amount of respect from those you are trying to lead. Secondly, consistency. If you tell a child if they don’t do something then they will lose a privilege and they don’t do it, if you do not follow through immediately on what your consequence were, they will not take you seriously. And again, you will lose respect. Lastly, consequences. When positive reinforcement and consistency are constantly implemented, consequences often won’t even need to be implemented, because just the description of what will happen is enough to get someone back on track. When consequences are needed, make sure they match the issue. Most importantly, in the course of correction, make sure you effectively communicate the issue that transpired and discuss how it can be corrected and done differently the next time. Coach Carroll’s approach to course correction has gotten him big public props from his players.
    4) Finding the Positives
This is a bit different than positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement focuses on reinforcing a behavior someone has demonstrated. “Finding the positives” is a way of being. Effective leaders, that are highly respected are generally positive people and pleasant to be around. Sadly, old philosophies of leadership, were to intimidate and not tolerate.

Leadership of the future is about being an inspiration to others by how you live your life.

Others will want to follow you because how you live and what you believe in will be in alignment with what they want versus telling them “that’s just the way it is” or “because you say so.” Leaders that find the positive in every circumstance realize there is wisdom to be gained in every situation. Even when things don’t go as desired, don’t waste time and energy complaining, seek the lessons and apply the wisdom.
    5) Each Individual is Motivated Differently But Love is Universal
Coach Carroll has been praised by his players by getting to know each one of them individually. He makes it his priority to get to know everyone of them intimately; where they came from, how they grew up, what their fears are and burdens of their past. He does this to understand what intrinsically motivates each one so he can speak to them in “their language,” to magnify the greatness in each one. One other thing he publicly spoke about, that I absolutely loved, and firmly agreed with is, he said, “he gives each one of his players love.” Wow, now thats a novel concept, right? Not tough love folks, genuine love. Because, regardless of how tough you are, how strong you are, or how determined you are, we all have one thing in common – we all desire and thrive from being loved.
True leaders don’t demand respect, they earn it. They see mistakes as teachable moments, not a time to yell or embarrass. They find the positive and wisdom in every moment, not get stuck on the failures. They make things fun so that people want to be a part of it, not feel dread to show up. They use constructive conversations for corrections, not punishments. They positively reinforce good behaviors not demean with negative reinforcement and teach collective team success and power in unity not separation. These are just a few that I hope each person can embrace and seeing Sunday’s Super Bowl was not just a win for the Seahawks but hopefully a pivotal moment in leadership.
